Direct Connection of two PCs

Description of how to set-up a direct connection between 2 PCs on Windows 2000.

Set-up the Host:

Use System Control to open Network- Connections

Add New Connection
-
Click ‘next’ and select direct connection out of the possible PPP-Connections.

Select to be PC-Host

Select the port (LPT or COM)

For COM-Connections only:

Select properties
-
Define the baud rate
-
Set Flow Control to non
-
Mark permitted users
-
Press finish to close configuration
Set-up the Client:

Use System Control to open Network- Connections

Add New Connection
-
Click ‘next’ and select direct connection out of the possible PPP-Connections.

Select to be PC-Client
-
Select the port (LPT or COM)

Enable connection for all user or for itself only

Name the connection
-
Press finish to close configuration

If the connection should be established right away define the user name
and password to be used for connecting to the Host in the open dialog
window and press the connect button.
Problems using the COM-Connection
If a COM-Connection (COM1-COM1 or COM2-COM2) between two PCs does not
work (usually Error-Code 777) it might be caused by a wrong labeling of
the ports, i.e. COM1 is actually COM2 and vice versa. It can easily be
checked by plugging the cable to the other port.
